Artists To Watch: The 1975

The 1975

If you like the 80s here’s the band you should be listening right now

About one year ago I was looking for something on YouTube (I can’t even remember what it was) and, as usual, I bumped into something better: I found a song called The Sound by The 1975. Who are they? A band from Manchester that started their career in 2002. Matthew Healy (vocals, rhythm guitar), Adam Hann (lead guitar, keyboards), George Daniel (drums) and Ross MacDonald (bass guitar) are all under 30 and they’re really really talented.

They’ve published their second album in February 2016 and they’re fame is growing day by day even in the US: they’ve been on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, they conquered a place in the line up of Coachella Festival 2016 (not exactly an easy challenge) and they won 2 Brit Awards.

The Sound is simply perfection: it starts as a “videogame-like” intro, with a voice distortion built on a crescendo that leads you straight to the chorus (yes, even before the first verse!). It’s catchy, energetic, the kind of song that makes you want to jump.

The 1975 latest album is called I Like It When You Sleep for You’re so Beautiful And So Unaware of It and I suggest you to listen to it as soon as possibile: their music is pure urban poetry infused with the best 80s vibes you can imagine. From ballads to sing-along tracks, these guys never fail: A Change of Heart is a sad breakup song that sounds like the perfect prom theme; Love Me starts with an irresistible Prince-like guitar that gets you addicted instantly. Some of 1975 songs will remind you also of Duran Duran and Talking Heads but, just for the record: they’re not copies. Everything in their music is original, modern and elegant.

That’s why during their shows (I had the chance to see them live at Rock In Roma Festival 2016) light effects were all they had on stage: their music doesn’t need anything else.

If you have time, have a listen also to their first self-titled album, The 1975: Chocolate and Robbers are the songs you’ll fall in love with.

If you like electro pop and new wave, you won’t miss this band.
