The Shape of Water wins Academy Award for Best Picture, Frances McDormand champions all female nominees
The Oscar race has finally come to an end and The Shape of Water triumphed at the 90th Academy Awards: Guillermo del Toro’s fantasy film won four Oscars including the top prize for Best Picture and other three awards for Production Design, Original Score e Directing.
After the 2017’s mix-up, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway returned to the stage to present the same award, this time avoiding mistakes. «I want to dedicate this award to every young filmmaker » said Guillermo del Toro during the acceptance speech for Best Picture. «I thought this could never happen. It happens. And I want to tell you, everyone that is dreaming of using fantasy to tell the stories about the things that are real in the world today, you can do it. This is the door: kick it open and come in.»
The Shape of Water triumphed over other favorites like Dunkirk and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri although both films won some golden statues: Christopher Nolan’s war movie took home three awards (Film Editing, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing) and actors Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell won the Oscars for their performances in Martin McDonagh’s film (Actress in a Leading Role and Actor in a Supporting Role).
McDormand also gave a powerful acceptance speech inviting all the female nominees in every category to stand up with her. The actress said: «Look around ladies and gentlemen, because we have all stories to tell and projects we need financed. Don’t talk to us about it at the parties tonight. Invite us into your office in a couple of days or you can come to ours, whatever suits you best, and we’ll tell you all about them.»
Other Oscar winners include actors Gary Oldman (for his performance in Darkest Hour) and Allison Janney (who stars in I, Tonya). Check the full list below.
